ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the usefulness of hemilaminectomy as a surgical approach in patients with intradural-extramedullary tumors.
Material and Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed of patients in a hemilaminectomy was used as the surgical approach for intradural-extramedullary tumors between June 2006 and December 2015. Demographics, preoperative symptoms, imaging characteristics, intra-operative findings, histological lineage, and post-surgical complications were analyzed. Average follow-up was 48.9 (range: 6-120) months.
Results: Fifty-three patients underwent a hemilaminectomy. A tumor was located at the cervical level in five patients, at the dorsal level in 24, and in the lumbar region in 24. Histological analysis revealed 28 neuromas, 11 meningiomas, 7 ependymomas and 7 "multiple injuries". Total resection without post-surgical neurologic deficit was achieved in 96% of the patients. There were no recurrences on follow-up.
Conclusion: Hemilaminectomy is an effective approach for the resection of lateralized cervicodorsal intradural-extramedullary tumors. It can also be used to treat midline lesions located at the lumbar level.
